What can a manager of a luxury apartment do when he finds that the richest occupant, who turns to be an investment fraud, has taken the pension fund of the apartment's employees? Josh Kovaks, the manager, has nothing in hand but to go for the cash safety net of Arthur Shaw, the investment fraud. He forms a team with Slide, a crook; Odessa, Charlie and Enrique, his colleagues; and Fitzhugh, an evicted building resident. It's a challenge for them to keep away agent Claire's team away from the scene. The heist is planned on Thanksgiving to keep away distractions. The only challenge now for Josh and his team is the heist itself.
In Tower Heist, some middle-class hard working people get heisted by their rich idol, money mogul Arthur Shaw (Alda). His biggest fan, Josh Kovacs (Stiller) has enough when he realizes that his idol is a crook. With the assistance of a common thief named, appropriately "Slide" (Murphy), Josh and his friends will learn how to get their revenge and inevitably "heist" Shaw back. Alan Alda did good playing a "bad guy." His character derives from the biblical "pretender God"he is anything but what he clams to be. <br/><br/>Then there is Eddie Murphy, he brings his natural sense of humor to the screen once more; however, seeing The Beverly Hill's Cop play Mr. "mean tough thief" was a little hard to grasp. And come to think of what I didn't "grasp," I wasn't sure if Stiller's character was supposed to be in deep transit at times or if he was just dazed. The main character was clearly supposed to be a "serious guy" too. Only, both the actor playing him and the writing was not right for a serious lead. I would guess that Stiller studied George Clooney's character "Danny" from the remake of Ocean's Eleven, being that there were too many similarities between the two characters for it to be coincidental. Both daze off and then have these elaborate plans, both find teammates nearly the same way, and both let themselves known to everyone including their enemy so that both characters (spoiler) can take the heat in the end. <br/><br/>Moving along, I still wanna know when Casey's gonna go through puberty so that his freakin' voice cracks already. Little Affleck wasn'tannoyingMichael Peña though, who keeps trying to steal John Leguizamo's image. Someone should have told him that he was in the film "Tower Height" and not Persona Heist! On the other hand, seeing Judd Hirsh in a film doing what he does best (being awkwardly funny) made the film worth my time, although I wanted to see him and Alda have at least one dialogue together. Here are two comedic actors from the same era and masters of the art in their own ways. And that aspect was not touched on for a second. It was like watching a movie with De Niro and Pachino and seeing the two not interact at all. <br/><br/>Finally, I liked Téa Leonithe eye candy, I mean lead actress. All I need in a flick is a tough chick to be happy, and Leoni's character Special Agent Claire Denham was exactly that. Leoni played a believable FBI agent too, but I kept wondering where her partner was throughout the movie. Along with that there are many snags in the film that are hard to see past that are not worth mentioning. <br/><br/>Then the end, which wasn't much of one, left several plot holes and bruises un-bandaged, and the movie was so convoluted that it was often hard to laugh at funny moments. Still, I did laugh, many times throughout so I'd say that if you can set reality and the need for a complete story to the side you'll probably like this movie. For parents, depending on what you deem age appropriate, there was more bad language than violence in this, so I'd say it was okay for kids 13 and up (rated PG-13). I also give it 6 out of 10 stars due to the lack of center plot development and an all around poor script.
It isn't that the movie is "bad", it just isn't very "good." <br/><br/>Ben Stiller is in a non-funny roleJosh Kovacs, long-time manager of a very expensive high-rise residential building in New York. His job is to make sure all the residents are happy. He has become good friends with one of the residents, and plays on-line chess with him.<br/><br/>That resident is Alan AldaArthur Shaw, very wealthy and well-known financial manager. (Think 'Bernie Madoff'.) In fact,a favor to Josh has taken on the management of the retirement accounts of the cadre of workers at the residential building, even though it represents a small account in comparison the all his others.<br/><br/>The spit hits the fan when Shaw is arrested for financial fraud and, among other things, they find out all the money in the retirement accounts has disappeared. All Shaw has to offer is "there always is risk in investing." But the FBI know that Shaw had been preparing for this day for several months, drawing down and closing accounts. It is rumored he has $20Million stashed away … somewhere.<br/><br/>Josh gets fired in the process for angrily going to Shaw's apartment and bashing in the windows of the prized antique car assembled in his living room. He says it used to belong to Steve McQueen. So Josh plans a bold heist (of the Tower), he suspects there is a safe hidden in a wall containing the money and if he gets it he can make the employees financially whole again.<br/><br/>He enlists the help of an all-star cast, including crook Eddie MurphySlide, Casey AffleckCharlie, and Matthew Broderick, a recently-evicted tenant,Mr. Fitzhugh. Téa Leoni is goodSpecial Agent Claire Denham who appears to be spearheading the investigation of Shaw.<br/><br/>The movie opened well, the premise was set up nicely, but the writers and director couldn't find a great way to bring the whole thing to conclusion, and chose a mostly slapstick ending. Mediocre.<br/><br/>SPOILERS: The guys used misdirection to get Shaw and the agents out of the building during the annual Macys T.G. parade, and did find the safe hidden in a wall. But it was empty. Then by accident they discovered that under the bright red paint of the car was solid gold. Shaw had perhaps $40Million of pure gold in the car's body and parts. So they used the window-washing winch and the top of one of the elevators to get the car out, hide it in the pool under the pool cover, andthe movie ends various families are opening boxes delivered to them, each one had a solid gold item, a wheel or fuel pump or steering wheel. Meanwhile a little black book detailing Shaw's hand-written fraud record was found in the car's owners manual assuring Shaw would go to prison for a very long time.
Toss everything you can find, starting with roughly diced plots, into the blender, press "Pulse," and pray: such appears to be the method behind Tower Heist.

The system is destined to collapse because the earnings, if any, are less than the payments to investors. Usually, the scheme is interrupted by legal authorities before it collapses because a Ponzi scheme is suspected or because the promoter is selling unregistered securities. As more investors become involved, the likelihood of the scheme coming to the attention of authorities increases. The scheme is named after Charles Ponzi who became notorious for using the technique in 1920. Ponzi did not invent the scheme (for example, Charles Dickens's 1857 novel Little Dorrit described such a scheme) but his operation took in so much money that it was the first to become known throughout the United States. Ponzi's original scheme was based on the arbitrage of international reply coupons for postage stamps; however, he soon diverted investors' money to make payments to earlier investors and himself.
